Faces of the Outback (FOTO)
Faces of the Outback is a new photographic series by Rasp & Sturt and The Nomad Company — a project dedicated to documenting the people who shape, define, and quietly carry life across far western New South Wales and the Australian outback.
This project is about real people. Not models. Not actors. Just honest faces and authentic stories. But these will not be standard portraits. This will be a photographic fine art portraiture.
Faces of the Outback is intended to be an artistic representation of outback people and life — cinematic, raw, atmospheric and deeply human. The images will aim to capture far more than simply what a person looks like. They will seek to reveal personality, presence, resilience, isolation, humour, hardship, pride, individuality and connection to country.
Some portraits may be dramatic and moody. Others quiet and reflective. Some may feel powerful, weathered, cinematic or confronting. Every image will be approached as a piece of visual storytelling rather than a traditional posed photograph.
We are looking to photograph people from all walks of life — young and old, men and women, station owners and workers, tradies, artists, publicans, stockmen, business owners, families, kids, retirees, community volunteers, farmers, health workers, Aboriginal elders, adventurers, dreamers, and everyday locals who call the outback home. Children are encouraged to apply (with parents written permission)
The series aims to capture the character, resilience, individuality, humour, strength, and humanity that exists across the region. Some faces may tell stories of hardship, others of success, survival, isolation, creativity, or deep connection to country — but every face has a story worth documenting.
Rather than asking people to travel to us, The Nomad Company will be travelling to you.
Over the coming months, we will be visiting towns and communities throughout the far west including:
-
Broken Hill
-
Menindee
-
Wilcannia
-
Tibooburra & Milparinka
-
Packsaddle
-
White Cliffs
-
Wanaaring
Portrait sessions may take place in homes, pubs, sheds, stations, workshops, streets, sporting grounds, stockyards, open country, or anywhere that feels genuine to the people being photographed.
This is not about perfection.
It is about honesty, atmosphere, identity, and preserving the spirit of outback Australia through powerful photographic storytelling.
Have you ever wanted to do something different — a chance to leave your mark? This is that chance. Opportunities like this do not come around often in remote Australia, so if it speaks to you, grab it.
If you would like to be involved or know someone whose face and story deserves to be part of this project, we would love to hear from you.
Selected images, once photographed, will be displayed on The Nomad Company website as well as the Rasp & Sturt website. Then further selected images will appear in a Rasp & Sturt magazine and possibly a book.
All participants of the photoshoot will receive a printed A4 copy of their photograph with a white border. There is no cost to the participants.
